Workers stood united in the face of anti-union intimidation tactics, with a supermajority signing cards

On Friday, April 12, a federal mediator confirmed that 77% of Planned Parenthood Northern California (PPNorCal) workers signed union authorization cards to join SEIU Local 1021 and will be recognized as a union through voluntary recognition.

The mediator received 273 cards in support of forming a union, of which 245 were verified with signatures signed on or before January 22, for a 77% supermajority win.

As their efforts to get a strong new contract with AHS management persist, AHS workers at Fairmont and John George Psychiatric Hospital rallied last Wednesday to protest the understaffing epidemic that has led to a serious safety crisis there.

Among the speakers was John George Psychiatric Hospital RN Handsel Meese, who spoke about being assaulted just a month ago when a patient got his hands around her throat. ”I could easily have been killed,” Meese said.

Port of Oakland workers petition against an unfair firing

On March 14, 2024, members and supporters of SEIU 1021 at the Port of Oakland submitted a petition to the Port commissioners, bearing more than 100 signatures, calling for an investigation into the unjust dismissal of George Vaioleti, a union member and a dedicated employee of 17 years. 

Their solidarity was unmistakable. They made their stance clear by donning union colors and wearing “Bring George Back” buttons in a call for justice. George expressed his gratitude for this demonstration of unity and support from his colleagues.

March 15: Rally in Oakland with fast-food workers as they take their seat on council

Hundreds of California fast workers officially formed a union with SEIU last week, and now they are headed to take their seat on the Fast Food Council on Friday, March 15. 

The statewide Fast Food Council consists of California fast food workers, government appointees, and industry leaders that will help improve working conditions for the state’s over 500,000 fast food workers. It was created by the passage of AB 1228 last year.
